walking backpack

If you’re looking to explore your surroundings and go for a walking day trip, there’s no better time to do so than the summer! You will be able to enjoy the good weather and longer days, and also discover the wildlife and flora which are thriving during the summer.

If you haven’t booked a walking holiday with Easy Ways yet, you may want to ease into long distance walking by going for a walking day trip! Although it’s only for a day, you will need to do some planning, as a walking day requires equipment. You will also need to take a few safety precautions to ensure your day trip goes smoothly no matter what happens.

Below, we will help you decide what to pack in your walking backpack to make the most of your day.

  1. Line your Rucksack

To ensure your bag is waterproof, put a heavy duty plastic bag inside it to add a waterproof lining to it. This will give you a great protection from the rain, and it will protect your belongings in case of very heavy rain, or if you fall into water.

  1. Pack a Waterproof Jacket

However sunny the weather may be when you begin your walking day trip, the Scottish weather is unpredictable, and so a waterproof jacket is a must in your walking day backpack. You may also want to pack extra socks, in case of heavy rain, so that you have dry socks to wear on your walk back.

  1. Pack Enough Water

Hydration is one of the most important parts of a successful walking day trip, and so it’s important that you don’t underestimate how much water you will need. It is recommended that you drink at least 1 litre of water before you start your walk, as it’ll help you stay hydrated longer. Throughout the day, you should aim to drink at regular intervals, and so, the amount of water you should bring with you will be dependent on your habits as well as weight and height, but generally, it is recommended you bring more than 2 litres if you’re going to be walking for more than a couple hours.

  1. Pack an Emergency Kit

Last but not least, an emergency kit is vital to ensure your safety in case of an emergency during your walking day trip. This is the most important item in your rucksack, and if you’re unsure what to pack, there are many ready to buy kits you can purchase online.
