The walking holiday to discover the sights of ‘Monarch of the Glen’
Monarch of the Glen was a British TV show, set in the Badenoch and Strathspey area of Scotland. It ran from 2000 ’til 2005, experiencing excellent ratings around the world.
The seven series had worldwide appeal and was regularly shown throughout the United States of America, Australia, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Hong Kong, New Zealand, France, Holland, Belgium, Vietnam and many more. In Australia, Monarch of the Glen was the most popular BBC drama in 2002 and 2003.
Where was ‘Monarch Country’?
‘Monarch Country’ is the colloquial term for the area in the Scottish Highlands featured in ‘Monarch of the Glen’.
Primarily, the filming was carried out in Badenoch and Strathspey. The area is rich in history with, stories about The Wolf of Badenoch being some of the most interesting.
Ardverikie Estate
Ardverikie Estate, near the small village of Laggan, was the focal point.
Ardverikie House, was in the centre of the estate. It also doubled as the MacDonalds’ residence. Also known as Glenbogle House in the show.
The estate also features the croft of the ghillie Golly MacKenzie and the local pub, the Ghillie’s Rest.
There are local tours which can provide you access to the estate, letting fans see where ‘Monarch of the Glen’ was filmed.
Laggan
Laggan is a small village in Badenoch, situated close to the River Spey.
It is featured on the show, however, it was called Glenbogle.
The village acts as an excellent base for a range of outdoor activities. Should you want to spend more time in the area, there are opportunities to fish, pony trek, house ride, golf and even pottery making classes. There are so many walks around Fort William that you and your family can enjoy!
