Sailing and Water Sports

With 22 larger lochs and a number of smaller lochs in this National Park, there is more than enough space to get out on the water and see the spectacular scenery from a different perspective. The Loch has a range of water sports and activities for all ages, from it’s very own Water Ski Club to Sweeny’s Cruises. There is also the opportunity to rent speedboats allowing you to experience the lakes at your own pace.

Cycling and Mountain Biking

By experiencing the loch’s surroundings by bike you are able to take in all there is to see at your own pace, with opportunities for everyone. One of the more popular routes is the West Cycle Path, between Balloch and Tarbet. The 24km stretch is predominantly traffic free with great options for both more experienced cyclists and families with younger children.

Walking and Hiking

There is no better way to take in Loch than by foot. There are a range of walking routes for all abilities from the 1km Loch Lomond shores walk in Balloch for a casual stroll to the 8 hour ascent of Ben Nevis – the highest mountain in Britain – for the more experienced hikers. By exploring the area on foot you may even be lucky enough to see some rare Scottish wildlife such as the Capercaillie, who tend to dwell in pinewoods between the trees and plants on the forrest floors, however, you’ll have to be pretty quiet if you want to catch a glimpse of the distinctive bird. Walks in central Scotland are some of the best in the world.

Whisky Distilleries

With whisky being one of Scotland’s biggest exports, why not visit one of Scotland’s many distilleries located in this area too, such as Glengoyne or Auchentoshan distilleries. You may even want to take some of the famous whiskies home with you! 

Tea Rooms and Cafes

With all of the sports you can experience in the park, there is no doubt that at some point you’ll want to sit back and relax with a cup of tea in one of it’s lovely cafes. The likes of The Oak Tree Inn in Balmaha on the east of the loch which is featured on Trip Advisor’s Roll of Honour – given to very few places – is a great place to kick back and relax after a long day exploring! With many cafes throughout the area, you are guaranteed to find some delicious food to enjoy while looking out over the spectacular scenery.
