Holidays in Scottish Highlands and Islands with EasyWays

Loch Ossian

Another option that can be incorporated either on completion of the West Highland Way or before commencing the Great Glen Way is to take the morning train at Fort William to Corrour and walk around Loch Ossian, a total of 14.5km / 9 miles.
At 1,350ft, Corrour Railway Station is the highest in the British Isles and is the starting point of the walk that will take the best part of the day to complete before returning to Fort William in the late afternoon.  The terrain is forestry in places but also offers spectacular mountain views under Beinn Na Lap; the nearest Munro in the region.
Train times to and from Corrour allow 3 hours walking time which should be sufficient as the route is flat for most of the distance. If you are thinking you may want to complete this walk, take a look at these research notes on Walkhighlands before you begin.

Small Isle Cruise from Arisaig

small isles eigg

Enjoy the beauty of the “Small Isles” on Eigg.

Another suggestion worth consideration is a Small Isle Cruise from Arisaig. This trip involves joining the morning Fort William to Mallaig train and alighting at Arisaig in order to enjoy a day cruise to the islands of Rum, Eigg, Muck and Canna – which are affectionately known as the “Small Isles.”
Lying to the south of Skye, the Small Isles are part of the Inner Hebrides and offer a wonderful variety of scenery and wildlife.  Rum, which is by far the largest island, possesses a cluster of formidable volcanic peaks, the architecturally remarkable Kinloch Castle.
Scottish Natural Heritage runs the island as a Nature Reserve where the most famous residents are sea eagles, re-introduced in the 1980s, although some birds have now abandoned Rum in favour of the neighbouring islands.
The cruise from Arisaig offers 5 hours of walking time on a selection of any 2 islands that are interchangeable dependent on the day of travel.
At EasyWays we are committed to ensuring our walkers are kept updated with walking news and information. Look at our last post to find out more day trips from the West Highland Way to Oban and the Highlands.
