Great Glen Way Scotland – How Long Does it Take?
Stage 1 – Fort William to Gairlochy
The first leg is from Fort William to Gairlochy.
The first part of the walk is 10.5 miles. Depending on how you want to experience the route and at what pace, you may be able to complete this leg and an additional 3 miles to your accommodation in Spean Bridge. If you stop at the stage end in Gairlochy, your hosts in Spean Bridge will be happy to collect you and return to the official route in the morning.
Stage 2 – Gairlochy to South Laggan
Walk the Lochside forest trail at Laggan Locks!
The second stage is 12 miles. After an overnight stay at Spean Bridge, continue to walk along the loch trail towards Laggan Locks. There are plenty of photo opportunities and places to stop to take in the scenery along this part of the walk!
Stage 3 – South Laggan to Fort Augustus
Fort Augustus is a very popular tourist destination!
From South Laggan to Fort Augustus is 10.5 miles. As with the other previous stages, this part of the walk is considered easy because of the terrain and follows the Caledonian Canal. Here, it is possible to watch boats heading from the canals into Loch Ness!
Stage 4 – Fort Augustus to Invermoriston
The views of Loch Ness are spectacular while leaving Fort Augustus!
The distance covered at this stage is 8 miles, though shorter than the previous stages, it allows you to really appreciate the atmosphere of Loch Ness from the forest trail high above. You can even incorporate a morning cruise at this point!
Stage 5 – Invermoriston to Drumnadrochit
There are high/low route options at this point!
Continue walking for 14 miles to reach Drumnadrochit. Another forest trail, it provides spectacular views as well as some steep descents. Drumnadrochit is home to Urquhart Castle, a famous historical ruin on the northern shore of Loch Ness.
Stage 5 Drumnadrochit to Inverness
After 6 days of walking, you’ll reach Inverness!
The final leg of the walk is the longest, covering 18 miles. After walking through moorland, continue through the Beauly Firth and following the River Ness path, you will reach your destination, Inverness. If you would like to split this days’ walking over 2 days, with a stop at Blackfold, get in touch and we will be happy to arrange this. Your EasyWays experience walking the Great Glen Way is then complete!
